After the murder of their DJ, Jam Master Jay, the remaining group members made the decision to never perform again as Run-DMC, out of respect for their fallen friend.

"For me, I tell people, 'Do you want to see me and Run running around without Jay?' But I can get any DJ in the world if I want. It wouldn't be right. He's been busy worrying about what he'll say when he reaches the podium. He joked that the representatives for the event "scared" him with their advice for his speech.

"They said, 'You have all the time in the world. We don't want you to be too long, but we don't want you to be too short,' " he said, laughing. "Then they said, 'You should write something.' "

DMC -- who, following the group's retirement, has ventured into a more rock-based sound -- said he's honored to be entering the Hall with Metallica and Bobby Womack. He called himself a fan of the former and said the latter was a "super superstar."

"For me, personally, I just love what gods are gonna be in the room," DMC said. "I'm a rock-and-roll fan, from Led Zeppelin to Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix.

"And Metallica? Oh my God," he continued. "I grew up as a kid looking up to Bobby Womack. Do you know how big he was? He was so far from me as a super superstar, because my mother and father followed him. That's crazy. Now I'm thinking about it, and it's just crazy."

Fellow Queens native and longtime peer LL Cool J agreed. He said the upcoming Run-DMC induction makes him "incredibly proud," as he recalled how the trio took him under their wing during his first tour experience. Stepping back as a fan, LL admitted, he'd like to see the fellas perform to celebrate the honor. But he respects the decision they've made.

"When I think about them performing -- and I would never encourage them to do something that they wouldn't do -- but I really wish they would consider getting video footage of Jay cutting and figure out a way to sync that up so that they could perform to it," LL told MTV News. "Kind of like the way Natalie Cole did it with her father. I really wish they would consider that. If I was Run, I would. I think it would be epic. That would be big."

Despite a Run-DMC performance missing from the itinerary, Run's older brother and group patriarch Russell Simmons said the trio's legacy will stand on its own. He said Run-DMC ushered in the era of rappers becoming actual recording artists. Prior to second-wave groups like Run-DMC, Simmons cited acts like the Cold Crush Brothers, DJ Hollywood and Eddie Cheeba as performing artists who largely composed numbers to hit the stage. Run-DMC, he said, were influenced by those groups, and it registered in their songs, which were incredibly authentic. Simmons, who built Def Jam into the most iconic rap label in history, said it was Run-DMC's authenticity that ultimately will be the indicator of their legacy and influence.

"They may have looked like the Blues Brothers to rock-and-roll guys, but that was some real Brooklyn sh-- right there [the way they dressed and presented themselves]," Simmons explained. "That's some Hollis, Queens, stuff. They were paying homage to where the music was coming from [the streets]. They drew the line in the sand. They weren't crossing over; they made people come to them. And with that, they really inspired the whole community. They did a lot to contribute to the sentiment of authenticity, which ultimately became the earmark of the culture as a whole."

Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington disappeared after a Metallica show last October.

Police in Charlottesville, Virginia, said on Tuesday that they believe the skeletal remains found on a Virginia farm could be those of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing on October 17 after attending a Metallica concert in the area.

According to The Associated Press, state Police Superintendent Steve Flaherty ordered an autopsy on the remains to confirm that they are those of Harrington, a Roanoke native who got separated from her friends after leaving the metal show and being denied re-entry to the venue. "We can't say with 100 percent certainty, however, there were significant items and evidence," Flaherty told reporters of what lead authorities to conclude the remains were Harrington's. Investigators would not say what the items were and did not speculate on what might have caused the college student's death. Autopsy results were expected on Wednesday.

The remains were found in a remote location on Tuesday morning by farmer David Bass while surveying his 700-acre property, which is about 10 miles from the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, where the Metallica concert took place. Flaherty said officials had not searched the farm before because there was no evidence that would have led them to it.

Harrington was last seen wearing a black Pantera T-shirt, a black mini-skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots. Her purse and cell phone were found by a passerby in a small parking lot between the arena and an athletic field.

After she was reported missing, hundreds of volunteers and police searched the surrounding area and officials received hundreds of tips. More than $150,000 in rewards were offered for information on her whereabouts, including $50,000 contributed by Metallica. Billboards and posters with her picture went up all around Virginia, and her family created a Web site to help in the search.

Once the remains are identified, police will likely begin a homicide investigation, which could lead to more information on how Harrington ended up in the field.

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger released an open letter about the incident on Tuesday. "For more than three months, the entire Virginia Tech community, along with thousands upon thousands around the world, has held out hope for the safe return of Morgan Harrington," he said. "Sadly, today's news from Albemarle County has put an end to that hope, and once again, we find our strength and resilience tested in the face of profound grief and loss."

Country superstar is linked to the role in the film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book 'Girls Like Us.'
By Fallon Prinzivalli

It turns out voicing Audrey in "The Lorax" and playing a shallow, high school cheerleader in "Valentine's Day" were just the opening roles in Taylor Swift's budding acting career. The Grammy-winning artist is linked to the role of Joni Mitchell in the film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book "Girls Like Us," Variety reports.

The biography maps the lives of three of the most influential female musicians in America: Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell. In an attempt to capture the life of women in the 1970s, Weller tells these artists' three unique stories. King is the daughter of a middle-class New York family, living in one of the city's outer boroughs. Simon is the product of Manhattan's intellectual elite. Mitchell's grandparents were Canadian farmers.

When MTV News spoke to Swift in March, she told us acting has always "fascinated" her. The role of Mitchell sounds like a part she would want to take on.

"I love the idea that you can tell a story in that way," the singer gushed. "I've been reading scripts for about five years. In my free time, that's all I do is read scripts."

But she isn't in a rush to choose just any role. "I just want to make decisions really carefully. I think, with movies, it's really important that you have to love something so much that you cannot think about anything else," she continued. "If you're going to become someone else, that's a huge deal. That's a huge commitment, and I would want to have the time and the ability and the love for something and the love for a character to where I could really make that commitment to it."

Swift would certainly have some of the background knowledge it takes to play Mitchell, being a musician herself. While Sony Pictures has not made Swift an official offer, other actresses have already auditioned — including Alison Pill ("Midnight in Paris") — for the role of King. Variety also reported that Katie Jacobs, executive producer of "House," is directing the script penned by John Sayles, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is set to produce. The biopic is still waiting to be green-lit, but the tentative start of production is later this year.

For young Hollywood news, fashion and "Twilight" updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com.

It may be a few years before a new album emerges, but there will be new music from Adele in 2012.
By Gil Kaufman

Could Adele be the next Bond girl? Not, like, in the movie, but on the soundtrack at least? The singer said in a recent interview that she will release a new single in 2012, which set off speculation that she might join the impressive likes of past Bond movie singers Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Shirley Bassey, Duran Duran, Madonna, Garbage and Jack White with Alicia Keys as the sound of the upcoming 23rd 007 flick, "Skyfall."

Speaking to France's NRJ radio, Adele said a "new song is coming out probably by the end of the year." Though no news has been announced, British oddsmakers have been saying that Adele is the favorite to provide the all-important title tune to the next Bond adventure, which is due in theaters on November 9.

In the meantime, the singer also revealed that she doesn't expect to have a follow-up to her global smash 21
in stores for several years. "If I didn't write my own songs, I'd be out next week with a new album," she said. "I have to take time and live a little bit. There were a good two years between my first and second albums, so it'll be the same this time."

With 21 still resting comfortably near the top of charts all around the world thanks to global sales in excess of 20 million, the singer said she's not worried about capturing that same magic in a bottle the next time around. "I don't think I'll feel the pressure for the next album to be as big as the last one because I know that's not really possible," she said. "What's happened with this album is very rare anyway."

Adele may have given a small preview of what the next album will sound like, though, when she revealed that her dream duet partner would be Beyoncé. "I adore Beyoncé, I've been listening to her since I was about 11," she said. "I think her work as an artist and a singer is enviable in terms of the length of her career and how she's grown and grown but most of my inspirations are (from) old music and sadly they have all died."

The singer, currently on her controversial Born This Way Tour, tweeted that she will make the announcement this fall. "Exciting news little monsters! I've played my new record for my label and will be announcing my new Album Title in September! X," she wrote.

Gaga has, in fact, been playing the record for her bosses and inner circle. She also revealed on Twitter that she spun the new music, her follow-up to 2011's Born This Way, for her longtime pal Lady Starlight. And her co-manager Vincent Herbert had some of his own teases for Little Monsters in an interview he gave late last month.

"[It's] just [an] insane, great record. She's on tour right now, but it's just going to be a great record. Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her," he said. "We're doing it on the road right now, so it's a little hard, but it's going to be great."

Though it's unclear how far along in the recording process she is for the release, in an interview with MTV News in December, she already had the highly anticipated album title in mind. "I've started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place," she said. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done."

Her producer, Fernando Garibay, confirmed in a separate interview last year that Mother Monster would be working on the album while on tour. "I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now. I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs. They're already incredible songs. But I feel like she's so young," he said, adding that at the time, the record was in its early stages and that "there's a lot of room to grow."

"The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms," he said. "Wherever she's at, we'll make it."

'I'm always for the underdog coming back,' Abdul says of new 'X Factor' judge Spears.
By Jocelyn Vena

Former "X Factor" judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger have remained pretty tight-lipped regarding the news that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will replace them on the next season of the Fox show. Until now, that is.

This week, Abdul sat down with Wendy Williams on her talk show and had only the kindest things to say about both of those ladies.

"I think it's going to be great, and I'll tell you why. I think people are anticipating seeing Britney Spears. She's overcome a tremendous amount of adversity. And I'm always for the underdog coming back.

"She's a big star," Abdul said in footage posted on Perezhilton.com.

"And then there's a new budding star, Demi, with her music," she continued. "Her songs are great. She's riding a wave that's really exciting. It's a younger demo."

Scherzinger is also sending positive vibes Spears' way. She toured with her back in 2009 and added a bit of advice for the pop star. "Britney is so bubbly and warm and everyone loves her anyway, so she just has to be herself," Scherzinger told E! News. "I think that it's something that we can't deny, but there's something about Britney that we ... are always rooting for her and behind her, no matter what."

According to Britney fansite Breatheheavy.com, Spears and Lovato will sit at the judges' table for the first time on Thursday (May 24) in Austin for auditions. Spears is expected to work an eight-hour day. She will also be in Austin on Friday for more auditions.

Cowell confirmed at the Fox upfront earlier this month that this week would mark the beginning of filming with the new judges.

With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be.
By James Montgomery

By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of "The X Factor," he cleared the chamber — casting off judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger (not to mention host Steve Jones) — and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition.

Of course, just who Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His $15 million deal with Britney Spears appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne to join the "X Factor" team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on "various perks"? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the "Factor"? Really, your guess is as good as ours.

Needless to say, we're not sure who will be joining the "X Factor" panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at all of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we want the "X Factor" to succeed ... lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment.

Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the "X Factor" hopefuls:

Britney Spears
Strengths: Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on any U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a "career" and a "contemporary" artist, giving the show an answer to "Idol" 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination and the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on "The Voice." As a bonus, she would also fill the "rambling" slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the "thousand-mile stare" void left when Scherzinger got the boot.

Weaknesses:
It's Britney: Live TV may not exactly suit her.

Demi Lovato
Strengths: At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker
for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of harrowing backstory that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points.

Weaknesses: Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of "Sonny with a Chance" when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon.

Miley Cyrus
Strengths: An established star (with a slightly checkered past), which would give "X Factor" the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like "The Climb" and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. Could also use the show as a way of launching the next phase of her career, which would be mutually beneficial and might just spawn something like the certified "Voice" smash "Moves Like Jagger."

Weaknesses: May currently be better known for her paparazzi coverage than her actual music. Might take another hit of salvia and confuse every male contestant with Liam.

Avril Lavigne
Strengths: Has been at it for a while now, has more genuine hits than anyone except Spears. She's also got previous judging experience and seems to be genuinely concerned with her artistic integrity. And although her Goodbye Lullaby album didn't match the commercial heights of her previous efforts, you can't fault her for aiming high.

Weaknesses: Preternaturally appears to be 14 years old. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the "sucking a lemon" face. Doesn't exactly strike us as a people person.

Sound off with your picks for "X Factor" judges in the comments below!
